Hanli van der Spuy

Cape Town

My first fashion illustration at 12 years old was the catalyst of countless skills & influences to the illustrations I create today. An interest in fashion design led me to learning to sew, the feel and fall of fabric and construction of a garment. A degree in Graphic design provided insight into composition, line and conceptual thinking. But it’s the heart of the subject sketched, the story to be told that allows these skills to speak.

Questions & Answers

How would you describe your artistic style?

Being influenced by mid-century fashion artists and renaissance portraiture, my work is timeless and conceptual with a touch of romance.

What’s your dream art project?

I am constantly keeping an eye open for opportunities with brands and events that create space for being innovative. Working with local luxury brands always get me excited as well as projects where creativity is explored and has a collaborative heart.

What do you love most about sharing your work with others?

There is a deep joy that comes from having others enjoy viewing my work as much as I have in making it. Creating something is an emotional process and putting my work out there is inviting others into that story and feeling those emotions. It's a privilege to be able to see the beauty of creation, putting my view into an art piece and then share that for others to feel as well.

How does the art community inspire or influence your creativity?

The art and event industries are full of so many innovative and talented people! Community over competition - always. We build on each other's successes so we can move the industry forward and create new ideas and possibilities. Seeing someone else refine their skills, create something exquisite and break into new avenues only propels me into doing the same! And to build actual relationships with others is vital - it's a support system and the best place to learn from those in the same space.

What LAMY instrument did you enjoy the most, and why? Or, what did you find most enjoyable about using LAMY during this creative process?

I enjoy mixing mediums and textures, so I had fun playing with different possibilities and effects of each product. Holding a quality pen hits different - I am in love with my matching set. And in a leather case? *chef's kiss*

What was your first impression of The Rockefeller Hotel, and how did the space or surroundings influence your creativity? Was there a particular spot or detail at Rockefeller that inspired a part of your work? How did your experience at The Rockefeller differ from other places you’ve stayed as an artist?

Oh, inspiration around every corner - literally! I went back to each space over and over to find all the visual treasures. So much attention to detail and I loved the collaboration of local artistic talents to create, not simply paintings on a wall, but a space to live in.

My favourite elements which I used as inspiration for my artwork is the black & white lettered walls and copper lights in the studio, the lampshades in the restaurant and of course the beautiful art prints of Gavin Goodman in the rooms.

If you had to describe Rockefeller in one word or phrase, what would it be and why?

Feast - of detail, textures, inspiration, vibes (and food!).
