How to Clean Your LAMY Fountain Pen: A Step-by-Step Guide

Regular cleaning keeps your LAMY fountain pen writing smoothly and prevents ink flow issues caused by dried ink or clogged feeds. It's best to clean your pen every few weeks, especially if switching inks or after long periods of non-use.

What You’ll Need:

✔ A cup or bowl of lukewarm water (avoid hot water as it may damage the feed)
✔ A bulb syringe (optional, but helpful for flushing the feed)
Paper towel or a soft cloth
✔ (Optional) Diluted ammonia solution (1:10 ammonia to water) for stubborn clogs

Cleaning a LAMY Fountain Pen (Cartridge or Converter)

Step 1: Disassemble the Pen

  • Remove the cap and unscrew the grip section from the barrel.
  • If using a cartridge, remove it. If using a converter, empty any remaining ink.

Step 2: Rinse the Nib & Feed

  • Hold the grip section under lukewarm running water to flush out old ink.
  • If possible, use a bulb syringe to force water through the nib and feed until the water runs clear.

Step 3: Clean the Converter (If Used)

  • Fill and empty the converter several times with clean water until no ink remains.
  • For stubborn ink, soak the converter in water for a few minutes before rinsing.

Step 4: Soak for Deep Cleaning (If Needed)

  • If ink is still stuck, let the nib section soak in a cup of water for 1–2 hours (or overnight for stubborn clogs).
  • If ink remains after soaking, use a diluted ammonia solution (1 part ammonia, 10 parts water). Do not use ammonia with iron gall or shimmering inks.

Step 5: Dry & Reassemble

  • Place the nib section and converter on a paper towel and let them air dry completely.
  • Once dry, reassemble the pen and insert a fresh cartridge or refill the converter with ink.

Step 6: Test the Pen

  • Scribble on paper to restart ink flow.

Extra Tips:

Avoid using soap or alcohol, as they can damage the pen’s components.
✅ If using shimmering or highly pigmented inks, clean your pen more frequently.
✅ Store your pen upright (nib-up) when not in use to prevent ink from settling in the feed.

With regular cleaning, your LAMY fountain pen will stay in perfect writing condition!
